Philosophy

If I should labor through daylight and dark,
Consecrate, valorous, serious, true,
Then on the world I may blazon my mark;
And what if I don’t, and what if I do?

Dorothy Parker

Fair Weather

This level reach of blue is not my sea;
Here are sweet waters, pretty in the sun,
Whose quiet ripples meet obediently
A marked and measured line, one after one.
This is no sea of mine. that humbly laves
Untroubled sands, spread glittering and warm.
I have a need of wilder, crueler waves;
They sicken of the calm, who knew the storm.

So let a love beat over me again,
Loosing its million desperate breakers wide;
Sudden and terrible to rise and wane;
Roaring the heavens apart; a reckless tide
That casts upon the heart, as it recedes,
Splinters and spars and dripping, salty weeds.

The Flaw in Paganism

Drink and dance and laugh and lie,
  Love, the reeling midnight through,
For tomorrow we shall die!
  (But, alas, we never do.)

The flecked river …

“The flecked river
Which kept flowing and never the same way twice, flowing
Through many places, as if it stood still in one.”

“that, in the shadowless atmosphere,
The knowledge of things lay around but unperceived.”

“The vigor of glory, a glittering in the veins,
As things emerged and moved and were dissolved,

Either in distance, change or nothingness,
The visible tranformations of summer night,

An argentine abstraction approaching form
And suddenly denying itself away.”

- Wallace Stevens

I’m a bitch, I’m a lover

I identify myself a lot with this song by Alanis Morissette

I hate the world today
You’re so good to me, I know
But I can’t change
Tried to tell you
But you look at me like maybe I’m an angel underneath
Innocent and sweet

Yesterday I cried
Must have been relieved to see the softer side
I can understand how you’d be so confused
I don’t envy you
I’m a little bit of everything
All rolled into one

I’m a bitch I’m a lover
I’m a child I’m a mother
I’m a sinner I’m a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I’m your hell I’m your dream
I’m nothin’ in between
You know, you wouldn’t want it any other way

So take me as I am
This may mean, you’ll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured, when I start to make you nervous
And I’m going to extremes
Tomorrow I will change and today won’t mean a thing

Just when you think
You got me figured out
The seasons all ready changin’
I think it’s cool, you do what you do
And don’t try to sing this
